Haemolytic disease of the newborn.

A difference in the proportions of foetal (Hb-F) and adult (Hb-A) haemoglobins between normal infants and those affected by haemolytic disease due to the rhesus factor was first reported by Jonxis (1948). His work was later extended by several investigators and the differences were confirmed. The hitherto reported studies have been concerned mainly with full-term infants and it was the purpose ...

Haemolytic Disease of the Newborn*

Since the discovery of the Rh blood groups (Landsteiner and Weiner, 1940) many articles on the subject of haemolytic disease of the newborn have been written. Gilmour (1944) in this country and Potter (1944; 1946) in America have presented authoritative accounts of the pathology of haemolytic disease, but, as the former points out, this aspect of the condition has received far less attention th...

I n the space of most paediatricians working lifetime, the spectrum of haemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) has changed beyond recognition. Thirty years ago, HDN was almost synonymous with Rh D allo-immunisation and was a common neonatal problem. It was usually unmodified by antenatal therapy and caused overt fetal or neonatal haemolysis, leading to marked neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia and at...

Control of haemolytic disease of the newborn.

The decline in the stillbirth and death rates from haemolytic disease of the newborn in England and Wales between 1961 and 1973 is examined. The possible causes for this decline are identified and data related to each are assembled. The effects of intrauterine transfusions, changes in the abortion law, and changes in the racial mix as well as changes in the incidence of toxaemia of pregnancy an...

The antibodies responsible for haemolysis can be naturally occuring (eg, anti-A or anti-B antibodies) or can develop as a result of a sensitising event such as pregnancy or transfusion. The most well recognised is rhesus alloimmunisation (Greek: allo = 'other' or 'different from') which begins with red blood cells from a rhesus-positive fetus crossing the placental barrier during pregnancy and ...
